Restrained Power of Social Media

I read recently that we lag behind most developed countries – 25th place in fact - in using the power of social media to find jobs. According to the survey, conducted by Kelly Global Workforce Index™, only 20% of job seekers use this route. Astounding, you may think, considering the unemployment levels and general adoption of online membership to social websites. The most common reason cited by those surveyed was being compromised because of the sensitivity of the personal content published. Does this mean the Brits are a little more prone to embellishment or projecting a less than ideal image to potential employers than our international counterparts?

Surely not! What this example does demonstrate, however, is the potential for social and business conflict – an area that may need consideration when planning social media strategies.

From the client’s perspective, due to the uncharacteristically shy attributes of many online social media members, businesses looking to fulfil vacancies are losing out on good potential candidates and a huge opportunity for brand exposure to the masses.  It’s an interesting dilemma but not, I’m sure, an insurmountable challenge for all concerned.
